Day in the life at IIT: academics, clubs, and fresher surprises?

Hey everyone, I got into IIT Delhi for BTech Mechanical and I'm joining this July. I'm curious what a typical day actually looks like — like how many hours are classes, how much time do people spend on assignments and projects, and how involved are most students in clubs? Also, what surprised you most when you arrived as a fresher? Any honest takes would help me prepare mentally.

Welcome to the IIT system. My advice as someone who teaches at IIT Delhi: manage your first semester very carefully. Your courses are foundational—Calculus, Physics, Chemistry, English—and they're not forgiving. Most students do 4-5 courses with 3 lectures + 1 tutorial + 1 lab per course per week. After class, spend 2-3 hours on problem sets and concept clarity. Clubs are wonderful but they'll always be there; prioritize academics in semester 1. Once you settle in and understand the expectations, you'll find your rhythm.

Thanks so much everyone for these detailed replies! This has really helped ease my anxiety. It sounds like the key is balancing seriously from day 1, but not burning out, and finding a community through clubs. I'll focus on courses first and explore clubs wisely. One last question for the seniors: how hard is it to maintain a good CPI in mech? Is 7+ realistic?

IIT Delhi Mech here, currently in 3rd year. Your day depends heavily on which semester you're in. First semester? Expect 6-7 hours of classes spread across the day (usually 8 AM to 5 PM with gaps), then 3-4 hours of assignments, quizzes, and lab work. But here's what surprised me most: nobody actually spends all their time studying. You'll see people in the mess having 2-hour lunch debates about random stuff, jamming in music clubs, playing basketball till 10 PM. The real grind hits during exams and project deadlines, but otherwise there's a lot of downtime that people fill with interests.

As someone who counsels IIT freshers, here's the reality: your first month will feel overwhelming because everything is new—the campus, the academic rigor, the hostel life. But by week 4, you'll have found your people, identified 1-2 clubs you like, and settled into a rhythm. Most students end up investing 30-35 hours per week in coursework (including classes, assignments, and studying), and another 10-15 hours in clubs and extracurriculars. Placements later depend on your CPI, projects, and internships—so don't slack off, but also don't sacrifice your well-being.

Passed out from IIT Delhi in 2020. What surprised me most as a fresher was how *free* it felt compared to 12th standard. No one's tracking attendance obsessively (though it's still required), and your schedule has a lot of gaps. I'd wake up at 7, have breakfast, attend 8 AM class, then maybe a 4 PM class, and the 10-2 block was mine to use however I wanted—gym, club meetings, chilling. The academic pressure is real, but it's a marathon, not a sprint. I did competitive programming, attended cultural council, and still graduated with a decent CPI.

Congrats on getting in! I'm in second year at IIT Bombay (Civil), so similar vibe. One thing I wasn't ready for: coursework is less about memorization and more about problem-solving. Your professors assume you can teach yourself concepts from textbooks—they use class time to show *how* to apply ideas, not just explain them. I spent my first month thinking I was falling behind, but I wasn't. Also, the hostel culture is a huge part of life—my roommate is my closest friend, and we study together most nights. Clubs are genuinely fun, especially tech and cultural ones.

My son is in 2nd year at IIT Madras. From a parent's perspective, what surprised us was how much the college supports mental health and well-being now—counselors, peer groups, activity clubs—it's not just about academics anymore. A typical day for him is classes from 9-1, then lab or practical, evenings mostly in clubs or library, dinner at 7:30. He does have stress during exams, but the peer support and structure helps a lot. My advice: ensure your child maintains a healthy routine, eats well, and doesn't isolate during tough periods.

OP, I'm a fresher myself at IIT Delhi starting next month too! Mechanical? We might be batchmates! I'm also nervous but reading these replies is calming. So basically I need to be serious in semester 1, but there's still time for clubs and life. That's good to know.

To the fresher above: yes, that's the gist. But here's a pro tip that no one tells you—your club involvement actually helps your mental health during stressful periods. I'm in the Aero Club and during exam weeks, we'd still have small meetings or work on our aeromodelling project. It was a break from pure academics and kept me sane. So find something you're genuinely interested in, not just for the resume.
