IIT Madras online BS Data Science worth it alongside regular degree?

I'm currently in my third year of a regular BTech in CS at a tier-2 college, and I'm seriously considering enrolling in the IIT Madras online BS in Data Science. My main concern is whether juggling both will be realistic given assignments, projects, and internship hunting. Has anyone actually done this, and was the IIT Madras degree worth the time and stress?

Honest take: if you're aiming for product companies (Google, Amazon, Microsoft), the IIT Madras degree alone won't move the needle much—your BTech, projects, and interview prep matter far more. BUT if you're targeting analytics/ML roles at startups or want to pivot later, it's a solid credential and genuinely teaches you modern DS concepts. Consider cost (~₹2L total), time commitment (~15 hrs/week minimum), and whether you have internship/placement energy left.

Thanks so much for the detailed replies! This really helps. I think I'll wait until my final semester or after placement to start, so I can give it proper focus without stressing myself out. Appreciate the honest feedback!

I completed the IIT Madras BS while working as a junior developer—it's definitely doable but demanding. The first two semesters are heavier on theory and programming fundamentals, so if you're already strong in DSA, you'll move faster. The real value isn't just the IIT brand; it's the structured curriculum and peer network. My advice: don't rush through your main degree; prioritize that first, then layer this on top once you're comfortable.

I'm doing it right now alongside my final year, and honestly? The coursework is rigorous but manageable if you're disciplined. Skip the optional lectures, focus on assignments and exams. The peer interaction on forums is genuinely helpful. Just don't let your college grades slip—recruiters still care about CGPA, and this shouldn't tank it. Also, the fee is an investment, so be committed before you enroll.
