About
Zakir Husain Delhi College is located on Jawaharlal Nehru Marg, New Delhi, 110 002. It was established in 1924 and is affiliated to the University of Delhi. The college is included in the list of colleges maintained under Section 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act, 1956, under the head Non-Government College teaching up to Master's Degree. Its motto is "Live by Love."
History
The origin of the college can be traced to the closing years of the 17th century, when Ghaziuddin Khan, one of Emperor Aurangzeb's leading Deccan commanders, founded a madrasa. An oriental college for literature, science and art was established at the site in 1792 with the support of wealthy citizens of Delhi. In 1824, Delhi College was engrafted onto this institution by the British East India Company's government. The college was affiliated to Delhi University in 1925 and became one of its constituent degree colleges in 1929. After the partition of India, it was revived as a non-denominational institution in 1948 with the support of Dr. Zakir Husain and others. It was renamed after Dr. Zakir Husain in 1975, and its campus moved to its present location on Jawaharlal Nehru Marg in 1986. In 2010, the Zakir Husain Memorial Trust resolved to rename the college as Zakir Husain Delhi College.
