Yukon University is a flexible, post-secondary institution grounded in research and education relevant to the North. It operates under the authority of the Yukon University Act and is governed by a Board of Governors and a Senate. Its address is 500 University Drive, PO Box 2799, Whitehorse, Yukon Y1A 5K4. Its vision is to become a thriving learning and research community leading Canada's North.
Yukon University traces its history to the 1963 founding of the Whitehorse Vocational and Technical Training Centre, later renamed the Yukon Vocational and Training Centre, on the banks of the Yukon River in downtown Whitehorse. College status was granted in spring 1983, when the institution became Yukon College. In 1988 the main campus in Whitehorse was officially opened with a potlatch, at which the institution was given to the people of the Yukon, and it moved from downtown to its current location, 2km up the hill. In spring 2020 Yukon College was granted university status and all thirteen campuses were renamed Yukon University.
The university's mission is to provide inclusive, quality education experiences that equip learners to seize opportunities, make change and positively impact local and global communities. Training teachers in the Yukon began in 1977 at Yukon College as a UBC after degree program, which graduated 70 students before it ended in 1982. Since 1995, Yukon College has offered a Bachelor of Social Work program in partnership with the University of Regina. The BECOMING Strategic Plan 2022-2027 is YukonU's first strategic plan as a university.
Yukon University has 13 campuses across the Yukon, which deliver tailored learning opportunities and programs.
