History
The college was started as a Rate School in 1866. In 1887, philanthropist Sri Nellissery S. Narayana Iyer donated land for the construction of the institution. In January 1888, the high school was raised to Second Grade College and affiliated to the University of Madras. The Government of Madras took over the college on 1st April 1919 and raised it to First Grade from 1st July 1925, with provision for teaching History and Philosophy. The college was affiliated to the University of Kerala in 1957, and is currently affiliated to the University of Calicut. The M.A. History course was sanctioned in 1979.

The college is currently affiliated to the University of Calicut, offering 11 Post-Graduate Courses and 15 Under Graduate Courses in Arts & Science subjects. It is recognized as a Centre of Excellence by the Government of Kerala. The institution focuses on the biodiversity and cultural and archaeological heritage of Palakkad, with research focus in the departments of Botany, Zoology, History, Economics, English, Malayalam and Tamil.

The campus spreads over 25 acres and is punctuated by imposing buildings housing various departments. The library offers a general library, OPAC search, a multimedia centre, a manuscripts centre, a Braille section, and a periodicals area with reading room. The History department's library possesses more than 4200 books.
