The college came into existence on January 1, 1912. It was established to meet the growing needs of young women of Chotanagpur. The first principal served from 1912 to 1936, and Sr. Vandana Ekka (Elisaba Kumari Ekka) is listed as principal from 1998.
Every year, 100 students are admitted to the college. Admission is by merit, based on a written test, an interview and academic qualification weightage. The examination is conducted by the Jharkhand Academic Council, Ranchi. Educational tour is a part of the training programme, and all trainees must join it.
The college lists a Library Cum Reading Room, Science Lab, Multipurpose Hall, ICT Resource Centre, Curriculum Laboratory, Music Room, Art & Craft Resource Centre, Teaching Learning Resource Centre, Health and Physical Education Resource Centre, Seminar Room, Canteen and Parking Space. The college uniform is a red border sari and white blouse.
