University Press of Florida is the scholarly publishing arm of the State University System of Florida, representing all twelve state universities. Founded in 1945 as the University of Florida Press, it became a system-wide consortium in 1973 and was reconfigured in the early 1990s into a single unified press. The press maintains status as the premier publisher of scholarly and general interest books about Florida and related topics.
UPF has published nearly 2,500 volumes and releases approximately 100 new titles each year across disciplines including international studies, archaeology, dance, history, literature, and political science. The press has undergone complete conversion to electronic editing and production. It publishes both academic and general interest works, including Open Access textbooks through Orange Grove Texts Plus (OGT+) and maintains an open access repository.
Books from UPF have received awards from academic organizations, Choice Outstanding Book awards, and Association of University Presses design awards. Works have appeared on Amazon.com bestseller lists and received recognition from major publications including Publishers Weekly, the New York Times Book Review, and the New York Review of Books. The press distributes through self-distribution in the United States, Scholarly Book Services in Canada, and Eurospan Group in EMEA regions.
UPF is overseen by the Florida Board of Governors and operates under the State University System of Florida. The press is led by a Dean and maintains a staff of 41. Current director is Romi Gutierrez (2019–present). The press maintains a single editorial board, single imprint, and unified budget structure.
