A two-year UW System campus in rural Wisconsin that closed in 2023 after 56 years of operation.
UW–Richland was one of thirteen freshman-sophomore liberal arts transfer campuses within the University of Wisconsin Colleges system. The campus offered an Associate of Arts and Science degree and a Bachelor of Applied Arts & Sciences, with courses supporting entry into more than 200 majors. Students could participate in the Guaranteed Transfer Program, which ensured admission to a four-year UW System campus if they met specified academic requirements.
The 135-acre campus featured seven main buildings: Classroom Building, East Hall, Melvill Hall, Miller Memorial Library, Roadrunner Gymnasium, Science Hall, and Wallace Student Center/Coppertop Theatre. Notable facilities included the Symons Recreation Complex (1987), Campus View student housing (1987, expanded 1988 and 1999), and renovated East Hall (2010). Student activities included a Student Senate, Phi Theta Kappa honor society, International Club, and club sports including men's and women's basketball, women's volleyball, and intramural sports.
On November 22, 2022, the University of Wisconsin System announced the campus would close on July 1, 2023, citing declining enrollment. The final year saw only 64 students enrolled. Community leaders attributed the closure to removal of the campus recruiter, transfer of international students to UW–Platteville, budget cuts, and administrative fees imposed by the parent campus. The UW System determined no viable options existed to maintain a presence on the Richland campus.
