St. Michael's was established in 1852 by the Basilian Fathers to serve the growing Catholic population in Toronto, educating the children of immigrants. Classes were offered in the fall of 1852, and in 1853 St. Mary's Lesser Seminary and St. Michael's College were merged into St. Michael's College. The college became an official Federated College in the University of Toronto in December 1910. The Pontifical Institute of Medieval Studies, established in 1939 by papal charter, accelerated the college's development in the Catholic philosophical world.
At the undergraduate level, St. Michael's sponsors four programs: Christianity and Culture, Book and Media Studies, Celtic Studies and Mediaeval Studies. In 2022, the Faculty of Theology federated with Regis College to create the Regis St. Michael's Faculty of Theology. Admission is to the Faculty of Arts and Science with membership at St. Michael's College.
The downtown Toronto campus is home to St. Basil's Church and the adjacent Odette Hall, the oldest buildings at the University of Toronto. The campus includes the Kelly Library, one of the busiest libraries in the U of T Libraries system. Facilities include St. Michael's College and Loretto Residence, and residence dining with a meal plan.
