A pioneering 1841–1845 municipal university founded by the Latter Day Saints in Illinois.
The University of Nauvoo was established in 1841 after the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints received a city charter from the Illinois legislature in December 1840. The institution was founded as the University of the City of Nauvoo and is believed to have been among the first municipal universities in the United States. Church leaders including Joseph Smith, Sidney Rigdon, and Hyrum Smith served as regents, with John C. Bennett as chancellor and William Law as registrar.
The university pursued an ambitious curriculum for its time, offering instruction in languages (German, French, Latin, Greek, and Hebrew), mathematics, chemistry, geology, literature, history, philosophy, astronomy, and music. The faculty was considered a 'rather remarkable group' for a frontier city, including notable scholars Orson Pratt, Sidney Rigdon, and Orson Spencer. While detailed records are sparse, historians believe the institution was probably superior to the average secondary schools of the era.
The University of Nauvoo operated for only four years. Following the 1844 murder of Joseph Smith, church leaders' attention shifted toward westward migration. In January 1845, the Illinois legislature abolished the Nauvoo Charter, disincorporating the municipality and placing its assets into receivership, effectively ending the university's operations.
