The university operates three schools: School of Integrative and Professional Studies, School of Business, and School of Cybersecurity and Information Technology. It offers 135+ academic programs including 30+ bachelor's degrees, 55+ master's degrees, and doctoral programs across disciplines such as cybersecurity, business management, healthcare, education, data analytics, and public safety. Undergraduate students can earn credit through prior-learning programs recognizing professional and workplace experience, including military service.
UMGC specializes in serving non-traditional, working adult students. About three-quarters of undergraduates attend part-time, and over 92% are employed full-time. The median age of stateside undergraduates is 31. The university serves approximately 53,000 military-affiliated students from around the world and is among the top 10 recipients of federal G.I. UMGC operates 175+ classroom and service locations on military installations and education centers throughout the US, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. The university maintains divisional headquarters in Kaiserslautern, Germany, and Yokota Air Base, Tokyo, Japan. It offers face-to-face courses and support at US military locations in Bahrain, Djibouti, Egypt, Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, Australia, Guam, Japan, Okinawa, Singapore, South Korea, Diego Garcia, Spain, and Italy. In the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area, classes are held at 20 locations.
UMGC's headquarters in Adelphi, Maryland, was retrofitted to meet LEED certification requirements. The university's Inn & Conference Center became the first hotel complex in the United States to achieve LEED green building certification in 2005. UMGC operates satellite campuses throughout Maryland in partnership with community colleges and other University System of Maryland institutions, including locations at Universities at Shady Grove and University System of Maryland at Hagerstown.
