UMCES is one of the nation's oldest environmental research institutions, offering graduate programs and undergraduate research internships across multiple disciplines. The center provides hands-on research experience, interdisciplinary coursework, and mentorship from world-class faculty. Research areas include aquatic and estuarine science, chemistry and molecular ecology, climate and environmental change, ecosystems and landscapes, and socio-ecological systems. Professional studies and K-12 programming are also available.
The center operates five constituent research locations: Appalachian Laboratory (Frostburg), Chesapeake Biological Laboratory (Solomons), Horn Point Laboratory (Cambridge), Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology (Baltimore), and Maryland Sea Grant (College Park). UMCES provides state-of-the-art facilities with cutting-edge scientific equipment, advanced collaborative spaces, and a research fleet. The Integration and Application Network provides scientific data, reports, and visualization tools for researchers and the public.
