UMB comprises seven nationally ranked professional schools offering 90+ degree and certificate programs. The School of Medicine (ranked 27th in research, 12th in primary care by US News 2022) is the fifth-oldest medical school in the nation. The School of Law (ranked 48th nationally) was founded in 1816 as the third-oldest law school. The School of Dentistry, established in 1840, was the world's first dental school and first to offer a science-based curriculum. The School of Nursing (ranked 6th nationally in 2015) pioneered the first nursing informatics program. The School of Pharmacy (ranked 9th in 2016) was the fourth-oldest pharmacy school in the nation. Graduate and professional doctoral programs prepare scientists and health professionals across multiple disciplines.
UMB operates 50+ research centers and institutes with $636 million in research grants and contracts in FY2025. The Institute for Genome Sciences at the School of Medicine conducts large-scale genomic research in precision medicine and infectious diseases. The university spent $1.1 billion on research and development in 2019, ranking 14th nationally and 8th among public institutions according to the National Science Foundation. Research spans biomedical sciences, health equity, clinical innovation, and community-based initiatives.
The 71-acre urban campus sits on Baltimore's west side near Camden Yards and the Inner Harbor. The Southern Management Corporation Campus Center (opened 2009) houses dining, meeting spaces, and URecFit recreation facilities. The BioPark expansion added 1.2 million square feet of classroom, lab, and office space across ten buildings. Two main libraries serve the campus: the Health Sciences & Human Services Library (founded 1813) and the Thurgood Marshall Law Library with over 400,000 volumes. Students access the Baltimore Light Rail, MARC Train to Washington D.C., and free shuttle services.
UMB generates $8.6 billion in annual economic activity with affiliated physician practices and the University of Maryland Medical System. The university confers the majority of professional practice doctoral degrees awarded in Maryland annually. Law students and faculty provide nearly 75,000 hours of free legal services yearly. The School of Dentistry logs over 105,000 patient visits annually and provides $6 million in uncompensated care. The School of Nursing operates the Wellmobile, a nurse-managed clinic serving medically underserved populations near Washington, D.C.
