A public research university in Montréal, Quebec, founded in 1878 and affiliated with HEC Montréal and Polytechnique Montréal.
The Université de Montréal was founded in 1878 around three faculties: theology, law and medicine. École Polytechnique de Montréal joined the university in 1887 by affiliating with the Faculté des arts. In 1943 the university left the Quartier latin for a new building on Mount Royal designed by architect Ernest Cormier.
Together with its affiliated schools HEC Montréal and Polytechnique Montréal, the university forms the first higher education hub in Quebec. About 600 study programs are offered. The university describes itself as Montréalaise par ses racines, internationale par vocation, and as one of the great research universities in the world.
The main campus is the Campus de la montagne on Mount Royal. The university has campuses or sites in Montréal, Laval, Brossard, Saint-Hyacinthe, Mauricie, Lanaudière and Rimouski, plus the Observatoire du Mont-Mégantic and the Station de biologie des Laurentides. Facilities listed include the Salle Claude-Champagne, Galerie de l’UdeM, Ciné-Campus, CEPSUM and several clinics.
