World-class philanthropically endowed computer science graduate institute focused on fundamental research and PhD education.
TTIC offers a tailored PhD program in computer science, allowing students to earn a master's degree en route to the doctorate. The institute is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and has degree-granting authority in Illinois. Research focuses on machine learning and optimization, algorithms and complexity, computer vision and computational photography, speech and language technologies, robotics, and computational biology. Faculty maintain an exceptionally light teaching load of one course per year, enabling deep focus on research.
TTIC is fundamentally a research institute where PhD students conduct cutting-edge work alongside award-winning faculty. The institute regularly produces publications at top-tier conferences and receives recognition including Google Faculty Awards, NSF Fellowships, Microsoft PhD Fellowships, and multiple best paper awards. The institute hosts nearly 100 annual lectures, colloquia, and workshops, and maintains an Industry Affiliates Program connecting corporate partners with faculty and students.
TTIC is located in Hyde Park on the University of Chicago campus and maintains a close relationship with UChicago's Computer Science Department. Cross-listing agreements allow TTIC and UChicago students to register in each other's courses. Faculty and students enjoy full access to UChicago's library system, athletic facilities, and other university services. The institute also maintains active collaboration with the original Toyota Technological Institute in Nagoya, Japan.
TTIC admits only PhD students and does not offer undergraduate programs. The institute provides financial support to graduate students and welcomes international scholars. Admission is highly selective, targeting the world's most promising computer scientists. The institute also offers postdoctoral positions and Research Assistant Professor (RAP) roles for early-career researchers.
