The Toronto Art Therapy Institute (TATI) is a non-profit organization located at 124 Merton Street, Unit 407, Toronto, ON, M4S 2Z2. It is also a registered Canadian charitable organization. The Institute offers accredited graduate-level education and training in art therapy.
TATI was established in 1968 by Dr. Martin Fischer, one of the first practitioners of the Euro-American profession of art therapy. It was the first art therapy training program in Canada. Dr. Helene Burt founded the current program structure in 2007 and established the distance learning program in 2015 to make training accessible to students living outside Toronto.
TATI offers a Graduate Level Diploma in Art Therapy (DTATI) in Onsite and Distance Learning formats. Both formats include 16 months of accelerated full-time coursework, 600 hours of practicum, and a major research project. The Distance Learning program also includes 176 hours of mandatory in-person, on-campus classroom learning through two 2-week intensive semesters. Students have up to two years after their last coursework date to complete the practicum and research project.
Applicants to both the Onsite and Distance Learning diplomas submit an application that is reviewed by an admissions committee and followed by a virtual interview. Completion of the TATI program meets the education requirement for registering with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO).
The TATI Graduate Level Diploma in Art Therapy programs are recognized by the CRPO for both academic and clinical practicum components. TATI is an approved training program by the Canadian Art Therapy Association (CATA). It is registered as a career college under the Ontario Career Colleges Act, 2005.
