History
The National Medical College was established on 4 September 1921 through donations from the Tilak Swaraj Funds. It was initially located at Victoria Cross Lane, Byculla. Dr A. L. Nair donated two acres of his land for the hospital campus, and in 1925 he set up a hospital named after his mother, Bai Yamunabai Laxman Nair. In 1946, the municipal corporation of Bombay took over the college and the hospital. The institute is described as the first medical college and hospital in India run by Indians for Indians.
Academics
The institution provides training courses in more than 25 medical and allied branches, including 9 superspeciality courses. Admission to MBBS is through All India Quota and State Quota based on NEET UG, and MD/MS admission is through All India and State Quota. Admission is also offered for BPTh, BOTh and BASLP. The institution boasts of the oldest Gastroenterology department.
Campus & Facilities
The campus expanded from two acres to twenty acres in 2006. The college is associated with the 1300-bedded BYL Nair Charitable Hospital. Facilities listed include undergraduate and postgraduate hostels, gymkhana facilities, a playing ground, a basketball court, an auditorium, a canteen, and girls' and boys' common rooms. The college is located at Dr. A. L. Nair Road, Mumbai - 400008.
Services
The institute was declared the first dedicated COVID-only hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic. The hospital states that it is the only public hospital in the city to offer urodynamic studies and hyperbaric oxygen services.
