The Michener Institute is a public, Toronto-based school of applied health sciences within University Health Network.
The Michener Institute of Education at UHN is a leading education partner of Ontario's healthcare system. It is a school within a hospital, funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health, and is part of University Health Network. Its mission is to offer a broad range of full-time, part-time and continuing education programs designed to meet the emerging needs of the health sector. Its vision is to be a leader in applied health science education through excellence and innovation.
Michener's history goes back to 1958, when a Medical Laboratory Technology pilot program began at Toronto General Hospital. Dr. Diana Michener Schatz was instrumental in founding the institution. Formal classes started in 1966 with financial support from the Ontario Ministry of Health. The name was changed to The Michener Institute in 1990 to honour the late Governor General, Roland Michener. In 2016, Michener and University Health Network signed an agreement to integrate through a shared governance partnership.
In 1972, Michener moved to its current location at 222 St. Patrick Street, close to many major teaching hospitals. Its simulation learning centre includes simulation suites, debrief rooms and 24 clinical examination rooms typically used for objective structured clinical evaluations (OSCEs). Listed facilities include a Learning Resource Collaboratory, Schatz Hall residence, a gymnasium, a squash court, strength training and cardio areas, change rooms, a Coaching and Counselling Office, a Chiropody Clinic, and bicycle storage.
Full-time programs accept applications through OCAS and include a CASPer test. Part-time programs, such as Anesthesia Assistant, also apply through OCAS. A graduate program, the Master of Science in Cardiovascular Perfusion, is offered. Continuing Education Certificate programs with fixed enrolment are also available, and international applicants may apply to full-time programs.
