Originally established in 1997 in Van Nuys, California as The King's College and Seminary under founder Jack W. Hayford, the institution evolved from The School On The Way, an internal education program operated by The Church On The Way since the 1970s. The university expanded through extension campuses in partnership with local churches during the 2000s. In 2009, it partnered with Gateway Church in Southlake, Texas to establish a branch campus, and completed its relocation of primary operations to Southlake in January 2014.
The King's University holds accreditation from the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools at Category IV level and the Association for Biblical Higher Education. Its seminary is accredited by the Commission on Accrediting of the Association of Theological Schools and has received approval for comprehensive distance education delivery.
