Stone Child College offers a Bachelor degree along with Associate degrees in seventeen disciplines and six certificates. The college serves geographically isolated populations with limited access to higher education beyond high school. As a space-grant institution and member of the American Indian Higher Education Consortium, SCC is committed to strengthening tribal nations and supporting American Indian and Alaska Native students.
The college is located on a rural campus on the Rocky Boy's Indian Reservation in north-central Montana. In 2008–2009, SCC had an enrollment of 511 students, of whom 98 percent were of American Indian descent. The student body is notably diverse in age, ranging from 17 to 72 years old with an average age of 30. Stone Child College fields both men's and women's basketball teams as part of the Montana Tribal Colleges Basketball League, formed in August 2010.
Stone Child College was chartered by the Chippewa-Cree Business Committee on May 17, 1984, and designated a land-grant college in 1994 alongside 31 other tribal colleges. The college has a retention rate of 47 percent and a graduation rate of 20 percent. Approximately 20 percent of students are bilingual or of limited English proficiency, reflecting the college's commitment to serving the local Chippewa Cree community.
