St. Mary's College was founded in 1841 by Patrick Reilly as a Roman Catholic educational institution in Wilmington, Delaware. The college was formally incorporated on January 29, 1847, by an act of the Delaware state legislature. Its enrollment reached a peak of 120 students in 1857, reflecting its early success as a regional Catholic college.
The college's fortunes declined significantly during the American Civil War, and it ultimately closed in 1866. The institution is now defunct and represents an important part of Delaware's 19th-century educational landscape.
