Academics
St. Berchmans College offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs across aided and self-financing streams. Aided departments include Botany, Chemistry, Physics, Zoology, Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, English, Hindi, History, Malayalam, Sanskrit, Sociology, Social Work, Psychology, Political Science, Physical Education, Business Administration, Commerce, and two new honors programs in Artificial Intelligence & Data Science and International Relations & Public Policy. Self-financing programs include BBA, MCA, Computer Science, Biotechnology, Commerce, Library and Information Science, Microbiology and Biochemistry, Renewable Energy, and Applied Sociology. The college is affiliated with Mahatma Gandhi University and maintains autonomy in curriculum design.
Accreditation & Recognition
The college holds UGC recognition under sections 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act 1956. It was first accredited with 'Five Star' status in 1999 and reaccredited with 'A+' in 2006. In subsequent cycles (2012, 2017), it maintained 'A' grade. The college has been ranked among India's top 100 institutions by NIRF since 2018. It received the 'College with Potential for Excellence' designation from UGC in 2004 and won the R Shankar Award for Best College in Kerala in 1996 and 1997.
Placements & Career Support
The Placement Assistance Cell (PAC@SB), established in 2020, has facilitated placement of over 1,300 students including MBA graduates through campus recruitment drives. The college partners with major national and international recruiters including TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HDFC Bank, Federal Bank, KPMG, Capgemini, Deloitte, Accenture, and others. The cell provides comprehensive support including resume building, mock interviews, group discussion training, and career guidance to enhance student employability.
Research & Innovation
The college supports research through dedicated research centers, research guides, and a Common Instrumentation Centre. All science departments receive support from the FIST (Fund for Improvement of S&T Infrastructure) scheme of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. PhD programs are offered across multiple disciplines with eligibility determined by MG University norms and UGC guidelines. The college maintains an active research committee and publishes the SB Academic Review.
Student Life & Support
The college fosters a vibrant campus environment through numerous student clubs including the Youth Parliament, Forum for Democracy and Social Justice, Vincent de Paul Society, Debate Club, and Quiz Club. Special programs include the Berchmans Defence Academy (BEDA) and the Skill Hub. Student support services include scholarships, grievance redressal mechanisms, anti-ragging measures, and caste grievance portals. The college maintains active sports, arts, and cultural programs with achievements at university, state, national, and international levels.
