The Seminary is a founding member of the Toronto School of Theology, affiliated with the University of Toronto. Its mission is undertaken in the context of committed ecumenical engagement.
The Ecclesiastical Faculty of Theology's principal graduate program is the Licentiate in Theology and Patristic Studies (S.T.L.), a two-year degree focused on rigorous theological research with particular attention to the thought of the early Church. The Faculty also offers a Diploma in Philosophy. The Institute of Theology offers programs from day-long workshops to certificates, diplomas and full master's degrees in theology. The priestly formation program follows the CCCB's 2022 Program for Priestly Formation for English-Speaking Canada and the Pontifical S.T.B. curriculum requirements.
The Permanent Diaconate Formation Program prepares candidates for ordination as permanent deacons for the Archdiocese of Toronto. The program includes a propaedeutic year of intensive discernment for aspirants and four years of formation for candidates.
Seminarians encounter a real-world diocesan setting in Toronto's cultural diversity, with regular and supervised pastoral placements. Facilities listed include a library with reference and research assistance and an online catalogue and electronic resources, plus Serra House, which includes a chapel, exercise room, dining room and kitchen, and common room and student lounge.
Enrolment is available in seminary programs in Ordinary, Extraordinary, and Auditor categories, as well as through Priestly Formation Program admission. Each priestly candidate is evaluated by the Rector, Academic Dean, Human Formation Counsellor, and a member of the Formation Faculty before admission. Conjoint degrees and certificates with the University of Toronto are offered for second-entry undergraduates.
