SOWELA offers more than 20 program areas leading to associate degrees, technical diplomas, and certificates. The college operates five schools: Arts & Sciences (Criminal Justice, General Studies, transfer pathways), Business & Applied Technology (Business, Culinary Arts, Digital Media, Cybersecurity), Industrial Technology (Process Technology, Industrial Electrical), Nursing & Allied Health (RN/PN, Surgical Technology, Sterile Processing), and Transportation & Applied Technology (Aviation Maintenance, Carpentry, Welding). Short-term training programs in high-demand fields like CDL and HVAC are also available. The college introduced a 16-week Fast Track Process Technology program in 2014 for students holding an associate degree or higher.
The main campus is located in Lake Charles on property formerly used as Chennault Air Force Base. SOWELA also operates instructional sites in Jennings, Oakdale, and Leesville, serving Allen, Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron, and Jefferson Davis parishes. The college mascot is the Flying Tigers, named after General Clair Chennault's World War II 1st American Volunteer Group. Campus facilities include the Phillips 66 Process Technology building, Arts and Humanities building, Nursing and Allied Health building, and Regional Training Center. Student services include academic advising, career services, counseling, library resources, tutoring, and student organizations.
SOWELA accepts applications through its One Stop Enrollment Center, which provides a single point of access for admissions, financial aid, and registration. The college offers dual enrollment for high school students and maintains transfer agreements with four-year institutions.
