SUSLA offers associate degree programs, technical diplomas, and certificates across three main divisions: Allied Health & Nursing, Arts/Humanities/Social Sciences/Education, and Business/Science/Technology/Engineering/Mathematics (BSTEM). The college is accredited by SACSCOC and provides pathways for workforce entry and transfer to four-year institutions. Notable programs include FAA-certified Airframe and Powerplant Maintenance at the Aerospace Technology Center, medical laboratory technology, and business management through the Roy Griggs School of Business.
The main campus is located in suburban Shreveport at 3050 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. The Alphonse Jackson building, opened in 2017 at a cost of $7.5 million, houses BSTEM classes and features a 150-seat lecture hall. The Metro Center at 610 Texas Street houses Allied Health programs and the Southern University Museum of Art. Student housing is available at Jaguar Courtyard with two- and four-bedroom options. The Johnny L. Vance, Jr. Student Activity Center supports student development through the Office of Student Life and Student Government Association.

The Port City Jaguars and Lady Jaguars compete in NJCAA Division I, Region 23, and the Louisiana Community Colleges Athletic Conference. Men's and women's basketball teams play at the Health and Physical Education Complex. The college's mascot is the jaguar with school colors of blue and gold.
