About

The Grand Séminaire de l'Archidiocèse de Montréal is located at 6895, rue Boyer, Montréal (Québec) H2S 2J6. Its primary mission is to form priests deeply attached to Jesus Christ, his Gospel and the Catholic Church. Since 2019 it has been administered by the Archidiocèse de Montréal, which took over administration that year.

History

A concordat signed on 7 November 1840 entrusted the formation of priests to the Séminaire de Saint-Sulpice de Montréal. From 1857 to 2020 the seminary was located at 2065, rue Sherbrooke ouest; construction of that building began in 1854, lasted three years, and was designed by John Ostell.

Academics

Formation is structured in four successive stages: propedeutic, discipleship (philosophy), configuration to Christ (theology), and pastoral. The seminary is an affiliated Centre de formation générale de base in theology, philosophy and pastoral studies, affiliated with Université Laval. Students obtain a civil diploma from the Quebec Ministry of Education and a canonical diploma recognized by Catholic dioceses worldwide. The seminary also offers a permanent diaconate formation program.

Campus & Facilities

In August 2020 the seminary moved into the former convent of the Sœurs des Saints Noms de Jésus et de Marie, at the corners of Boyer and Bélanger. Listed facilities include a chapel and prayer spaces, classrooms, sports grounds and activity areas, and a dining hall for community meals.

Admissions

Admission to seminary formation is handled through the diocesan vocations director. University admission is available to theology programs offered through Université Laval's FTSR, including the Baccalauréat (grade canonique) and the Certificat en théologie. Continuing education courses are offered in theology and philosophy.
