SIT offers accredited, experiential programs combining field-based learning with academic research and internships. SIT Study Abroad provides semester and summer undergraduate programs addressing critical global issues on all seven continents. SIT Graduate Institute delivers master's degrees and certificates in low-residency and global formats, plus Doctor of Education in Global Education and PhDs in Sustainability and International Relations. All programs are organized around seven critical global issues: Climate & Environment, Development & Inequality, Education & Social Change, Geopolitics & Power, Global Health & Well-being, Identity & Human Resilience, and Peace & Justice.
Established in 1964, SIT originally served as the first training site for the Peace Corps. The institution expanded to offer graduate programs beginning in 1969, including Masters in Teaching Languages (MAT) and International Career Training (ICT). Notable alumni include Nobel Peace Prize winner Jody Williams (MAT 1984) and trustee Wangari Maathai. SIT was the first study abroad program to achieve net-zero energy status and received the U.S. State Department's English Language Fellow Top Producing Institution Award in 2019.
The main Vermont campus is located at 1 Kipling Road in Brattleboro on a rural setting. SIT operates nearly 30 learning centers across 29 countries, employing primarily local citizens as lecturers, facilitators, and program staff. The institution is part of World Learning Inc., a nonprofit international development organization founded in 1932 as the Experiment in International Living.
