History
Sapatgram College was established on 7 August 1972 at the initiative of local people interested in spreading higher education in this economically backward area. Initially, it functioned from the Kachari building of the Zamindar of Parbatjoar in Ward No. 1 of Sapatgram Town. Sri R.K. Sharma was the founder Principal of the College. The college is the only institution of higher education in this highly backward area of western Assam.
Affiliation and Recognition
The college was affiliated by Gauhati University in 1980-81 and was brought under the Deficit Grants-in-Aid system on 1 September 1983. It was recognized by the University Grants Commission under Section 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act, 1956 in July 2002. The college was assessed by NAAC in December 2004 and awarded a C++ grade. In February 2016 it was accredited with Grade B (CGPA 2.81) in the third cycle.
Academics
The college offers two-year Higher Secondary and three-year Degree courses in the Arts stream, along with a one-year Regular PGDCA course. Its vision is to become a centre of excellence in higher learning by making education socially relevant and meaningful. The college aims to provide life-oriented, value-based education that strengthens the body, purifies the mind and sharpens the intellect.
Campus and Facilities
The college is spread over 25 bighas of land in the Sonamoyee Gaon Panchayat on the banks of the river Loska. Listed facilities include a Central Library, Language Lab, Smart Classrooms, Computer Lab, Psychological Lab, Conference Hall, Girls and Boys Common Rooms, Canteen, Indoor Stadium and Gymnasium, a Disabled-friendly washroom and the Ranendra Narayan Basumatary Auditorium.
