Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences is a public institution located at Raebareli Road, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh 226014. Its degrees are recognised by the Medical Council of India. The institute is named after Sanjay Gandhi.
History
The foundation stone was laid on December 14, 1980 by the then President of India, Shri Neelam Sanjiva Reddy. The institute was established in 1983 under the State Legislature Act and was created by the state of Uttar Pradesh as a centre of excellence for medical care, education and research. The Telemedicine programme was initiated in 1999, and the College of Nursing started in 2008 with a B.Sc. Nursing course, with M.Sc Nursing commencing in 2019. In April 2026, the institute performed the state's first cardiac transplant.
Academics and Research
Training programmes lead to D.M., M.Ch., M.D., Ph.D., postdoctoral fellowships and postdoctoral certificate programmes across various disciplines. The institute aims to provide the country with adequately trained and ethically sound professionals and to develop new specialty training. Its goal is to create an environment that supports research through state-of-the-art facilities, seed funding, clinical trial participation and collaborative projects nationally and internationally.
Campus & Facilities
The institute is situated on a 550 acre campus at Raebareli Road, 15 km from the main city. Facilities include ICT-enabled classrooms, seminar rooms and auditoriums, central and departmental libraries, clinical skill, diagnostic and research laboratories, and a telemedicine centre. The campus also has a General Hospital, indoor and outdoor sports complexes, a cricket ground, a green garden with jogging tracks, a hobby and yoga centre, and hostels and residences.
