About
SDM College of Dental Sciences & Hospital was founded in 1986 by the SDME Society, Ujire, with a vision to train students to excel in knowledge, skills and service to the community. It is a private college and a unit of Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara University. The college is situated at Sattur, between Hubli and Dharwad, in northern Karnataka. Its address is Sattur, Dharwad – 580 009.
History
The institution began with an intake of 40 students in the premises of SDM Engineering College Dharwad. The Dental Council of India recognized its BDS course in 1991. In 1993, it started the first Department of Oral Implantology in the country, with the support of Prof. Hans L. Grafelmann.
Academics
Postgraduate courses were started in 1992 in all nine specialities of dentistry. The institution's vision is learner-centred education, patient-centred service and community-oriented research of excellence. Its mission includes contributing professionally competent general and speciality personnel to meet regional, national and global oral health care needs. The college offers BDS first-year admission and MDS admission.
Campus & Facilities
The college and hospital are spread over a 23 acre campus with 2,50,000 sq.ft. The hospital treats about 1,30,000 patients a year. The library has more than 8000 books on dentistry and medicine, along with a Learning Resource Centre, browsing centre and Wi-Fi. Facilities listed include a dining hall, cafeteria, sports facilities with a swimming pool, indoor games, a music room, an auditorium, a college bus and a girls hostel.
Recognition
The college has been accredited by NAAC three times, as stated on its website. It was the first college in India to have an exclusive department of Forensic Odontology. The BDS degree offered by the institution is recognized by the Govt. of Malaysia.
