Russell Sage College offers undergraduate and graduate degree and certificate programs across multiple schools and divisions. The institution was originally chartered as a women's college in 1927 and became fully co-educational in 2020 when Russell Sage College, Sage College of Albany, and Sage Graduate Schools united under a single charter. The college maintains a commitment to combining liberal arts education with preparation for specific professional careers.
The main Troy campus occupies a self-contained 10-acre historic district with 19th-century brownstone residences, Victorian gates, formal courtyards, and walled gardens. Student housing includes traditional residence halls and themed houses such as French House, Spanish House, and Wool House for honors students. The college offers diverse student organizations including honor societies, a cappella groups, student newspaper, and cultural, religious, and academic clubs. Notable traditions include class color rotations, Banner Night, Ring Dinner, and Rally, a community fundraising competition.
Russell Sage competes in NCAA Division III as the Gators in the Empire 8 Conference. The college currently offers 19 athletic teams, including baseball, women's golf, and eSports added in 2021–2022. Women's Flag Football will launch in Spring 2026. Club and intramural teams supplement the intercollegiate program.
Founded in 1916 by suffragist Margaret Olivia Slocum Sage, the college initially operated under Emma Willard School's charter before receiving independent degree-granting authority in 1927. An Albany Division opened in 1949, and the institution expanded to include graduate programs and evening education. In April 2025, Russell Sage announced a planned merger with Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, expected to be completed by Fall 2027.
