Roane State offers both career-preparation and transfer programs. Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S) and certificate programs prepare students for immediate workforce entry, while transfer programs allow students to complete two years at Roane State before transferring to four-year institutions. The college also provides noncredit professional development courses in business, healthcare, and other fields.
The main campus is located in Harriman on Patton Lane. Beyond the main campus, Roane State operates nine additional satellite campuses and centers in Oak Ridge, LaFollette, Crossville, Jamestown, Knoxville, Lenoir City, Huntsville, Wartburg, and Rockwood. The college maintains a strong athletic program through membership in the Eastern Division of the Tennessee Junior and Community College Athletic Association, fielding men's and women's basketball, men's baseball, and women's softball teams. The Raider is the college mascot.
Roane State was authorized by the Tennessee General Assembly in 1969 and began offering classes in fall 1971 at a temporary location. The college moved to its permanent main campus in Harriman in August 1973. Over subsequent decades, the college expanded with branch campuses and centers, including the Oak Ridge campus (opened 1999), the Center for Health Sciences, and the Tamke-Allan Observatory for astronomy education.
