Ricker College began as Houlton Academy in 1848 and was renamed Ricker Classical Institute in 1887 in honor of Doctor Joseph Ricker, State Secretary of the Maine Baptist Convention. The institution became Ricker Junior College in 1934 and expanded to offer four-year liberal arts education. It continued to operate a secondary school program through 1967 alongside its collegiate offerings.

After the main campus closed in 1978, off-campus continuing education programs remained operational for a time, though not at the collegiate level.
Ricker College closed in May 1978 due to financial pressures affecting small private colleges nationwide during the 1970s. Today, the University of Maine at Presque Isle Outreach at Houlton operates in a renovated building on Military Street, continuing higher education access in the community.
