History
The Govt. Girls' Degree College, DLW was established in May 2000 by the Government of Uttar Pradesh. It was set up to meet the growing need for higher education institutions for women in semi-urban and rural areas of southern Varanasi. The Diesel Locomotive Works authorities provided eight acres of railway land on lease for the college building, to benefit wards of DLW employees.

Academics
The college conducts undergraduate courses in nine subjects: Hindi, Sanskrit, English, Home Science, Psychology, Physical Education, History, Sociology and Economics. B.Com and postgraduate courses in these subjects were launched in 2019. The college has a Department of Library Science. Admission is merit-based for BA and BCom undergraduate courses and for postgraduate courses.
Campus & Facilities
The campus has an e-library with 10,000 text-books, including 500 reference books, and the computer section has 20 computers with internet connectivity and Wi-Fi services. Listed facilities include smart classrooms, a digital library, a computer centre, laboratories for Home Science, Psychology and Physical Education, a conference hall, an examination control room, CCTV surveillance, solar panels and a sports room. The college has two NSS units and a Rani Laxmibai Rangers team.
Recognition
The college is accredited by NAAC with a 'B' grade. Some students have made their mark at the national level in kabaddi and shooting, and some are currently public servants.
