The Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) is a public institute located in Chandigarh. It became an autonomous body under an Act of Parliament in 1967 and functions under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. Its logo states its mission: Service to the Community, Care of the Needy and Research for the Good of all.
History
The institute started in 1962. Pt Jawahar Lal Nehru inaugurated the hospital, now named Nehru Hospital, on 7th July 1963. It was originally under the Government of undivided Punjab, and administrative control passed to the Union Territory of Chandigarh in November 1966. The PGIMER owes its inception to the vision of late Sardar Partap Singh Kairon, the then Chief Minister of Punjab. Its founders include Prof. Tulsi Das, Prof. Santokh Singh Anand, Prof. PN Chuttani, Prof. BN Aikat, Prof. Sant Ram Dhall and Prof. Bala Krishna.
Mission
The institute's mandate includes providing high quality patient care and attaining self-sufficiency in postgraduate medical education. It aims to meet the country's need for highly qualified medical teachers in all medical and surgical disciplines. It also provides educational facilities for training personnel in all important branches of health activity and undertakes basic community based research.
Admissions
Admission routes include the MD/MS entrance examination, the DM/M.Ch entrance examination and the MDS entrance examination. Foreign nationals are considered through the MD/MS merit list, and sponsored or deputed candidates also have a route of admission.
