Academics
NIT Srinagar offers undergraduate B.Tech programmes across eight engineering disciplines: Chemical, Mechanical, Civil, Computer Science, Electrical, Electronics & Communication, Metallurgical Engineering, and Information Technology, plus Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Humanities & Social Sciences. Postgraduate M.Tech programmes are available in multiple streams, and the institute supports M.Phil and Ph.D research. The Chemical Engineering department, established in 1963, currently enrolls 103 B.Tech and 19 M.Tech students. Course curricula are regularly updated to align with industry requirements and national trends.
Campus & Infrastructure
The institute is situated on the banks of Dal Lake with the Hazratbal Shrine visible from campus. It is a fully residential facility with four boys' hostels and one girls' hostel accommodating approximately 1,500 boys and 200 girls. The library is one of the best technical libraries in Jammu & Kashmir, housing over 60,000 books on engineering, science, and humanities, plus 6,000 bound volumes and journals. Additional facilities include NCC, NSS, bank, shopping complex, recreational centre, dispensary with ambulance, guest house, gymnasium, internet centre, and bus service.
Departments & Research
The institute comprises eight engineering departments, three science departments (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry), and a Humanities & Social Sciences department. Specialized research centres include the Water Resources Centre, IET, and iDream. Central facilities include a Central Research Facility, Computer Services Centre, Central Workshop, and Medical Unit. Departments maintain well-equipped laboratories; for example, Chemical Engineering operates laboratories in fluid mechanics, heat transfer, thermodynamics, reaction engineering, and mass transfer, with research labs in separation processes, energy, environment, and biotechnology.
Placements & Industry Engagement
The institute maintains a Training & Placements cell and an Industry Interaction cell established in 1989 to foster collaboration with industries and facilitate student placements. Alumni have progressed to senior positions in national and international organizations, including successful entrepreneurs, scientists, industrial engineers, and defence scientists. The institute actively conducts seminars, workshops, short-term courses, and faculty development programmes to enhance industry-academia linkages.
