National Institute of Technology Durgapur is a public technological institution established in 1960 by an Act of Parliament, awarding degrees as a university.
The National Institute of Technology, Durgapur was established by an Act of Parliament in 1960 as one of eight such colleges, and was formerly known as Regional Engineering College, Durgapur. It is a fully-funded technological institution of the Government of India and is administered by an autonomous Board of Governors. The institute is located about 160 km north-west of Kolkata on the Howrah-Delhi main railway route. Its vision is to impart quality technical education and focus on research and innovation to cater to the needs of the country.
The institute is a university that awards B.Tech., M.C.A., M.Sc., M.B.A., M.Tech. and Ph.D. degrees. It imparts education in disciplines including Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Information Technology, Biotechnology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Environmental Science, Materials Science and Management Studies. Its Central Research Facility is housed in UTKARSH BHAWAN, a G+10 storied Central Research and Academic Laboratory Building.
The institute spreads over 187 acres and is fully residential and co-educational, with 13 hostels that all have WiFi facility. The library holds a collection of 1.The campus has two banks, State Bank of India NIT Durgapur Branch and Canara Bank. The Medical Unit is served by three resident doctors, three contractual doctors and other medical staff, with round-the-clock medical emergency services.
Undergraduate B.Tech, Dual Degree and Integrated M.Sc. admissions are offered through JoSAA/CSAB, DASA and ICCR for 2026. The institute also offers an MSW Programme (2-year) for 2026-28 through an entrance test, and PhD admissions for the Odd Semester 2026-27.
The NIT Durgapur was ranked 49th in NIRF Engineering 2025. Aarohan, its annual techno-management fest, is stated to be the 2nd largest technical fest in the whole of eastern India. The Radio Station Nitroz was formed in 2006-2007 by students of the institute.
