NIFT was established as India's first fashion education institute in partnership with Fashion Institute of Technology (F.I.T.), New York, in 1986. The first NIFT campus was established at New Delhi in 1994. Gandhinagar was among five campuses established in 1995, alongside Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai. The Parliament of India granted NIFT full statutory and degree-awarding powers following the NIFT Act, 2006. NIFT co-founded the International Foundation of Fashion Technology Institute (IFFTI) in 1998 and marked its 40th Foundation Year in 2026.
NIFT offers 13 programmes and has 16K students enrolled. Through the Craft Cluster Initiative, NIFT works with craft communities across India to document, preserve and innovate traditional knowledge systems. NIFT published the first volume of the NIFT Journal of Fashion (NJF) in 2022 as an annual, peer-reviewed, open-access publication.
Admission routes include the NIFTEE entrance test for UG, PG, Ph.D. and special categories, Lateral Entry (NLEA-UG), International Admissions (NRI, OCI, PIO, SAARC, Foreign Nationals), an Artisans Category, and Ph.D. admission. NIFT has 51K alumni.
