Academics
NID offers a comprehensive spectrum of design education across five faculty streams with emphasis on hands-on, minds-on learning philosophy inherited from the Bauhaus movement. The institute provides 8 Bachelor Degree programmes and 7 Master Degree programmes (2.5 years duration) at Ahmedabad Campus, with recently introduced PhD programme (5 years). Gandhinagar Campus offers 7 master programmes, and Bengaluru Campus offers 5 master programmes. All programmes encourage transdisciplinary design projects and problem-solving capabilities.
History & Mission
NID was established in September 1961 following the landmark 1958 Eames Report, which recommended problem-solving design consciousness linking learning with actual experience. Founded by the Government of India with Ford Foundation assistance and the Sarabhai family's pivotal role, NID pioneered industrial design education in India after Bauhaus and Ulm. The institute operates as an autonomous body under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and is recognized as an Institution of National Importance.
Campus & Infrastructure
NID operates three campuses across India: the original Ahmedabad Campus in Gujarat city center, Gandhinagar Campus also in Gujarat, and Bengaluru Campus in Karnataka. All campuses are open to visitors Monday-Friday, 9am-6pm (excluding public holidays), with visitor passes available at main gates. Guided campus tours can be arranged for groups with prior appointment. The institute houses specialized research centers including the Innovation Center for Natural Fiber, International Centre for Indian Crafts, Center for Bamboo Initiatives, Railway Design Center, and Smart Handloom Innovation Centre.
Admissions
Admissions for B.Des. and M.Des. programmes for 2026-27 are open. Prospective students must apply through the official admissions portal at https://admissions.nid.edu. Research & Innovation
NID is recognized by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation. The institute operates multiple research and innovation centers including the Intellectual Property Rights Cell, Innovation Center for Natural Fiber, International Centre for Indian Crafts (ICIC), Center for Bamboo Initiatives, Railway Design Center, and Smart Handloom Innovation Centre. NID also runs a National Design Business Incubator supporting entrepreneurship and innovation.
