The college was founded in 1969 by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Edmonton. Its Edmonton location was built in 2010, after the earlier location in St. Albert. Throughout its history, the college has formed over 1700 leaders, including lay people in ministry, priests from across Western Canada, and religious brothers and sisters.
Beginning as a graduate school, Newman now offers graduate studies, undergraduate studies, and certificates. Its undergraduate programs include a Bachelor of Arts in Catholic Studies, a Diploma of Theology, and a Certificate of Theology. The Bachelor of Arts in Catholic Studies is fully accredited by the Government of Alberta, following review and recommendation by the Campus Alberta Quality Council. Graduate degrees approved under its 2024 ATS re-accreditation are the M.R.E., M.T.S., and M.Div.
Admission routes include options for Alberta students, students from other Canadian provinces, applicants from the U.S.A. or other countries, and homeschooled students. Seminarians may apply via St. Joseph Seminary. As a privately-funded college, Newman offers over 20 bursaries and scholarships from its benefactors, and students can apply using a bursary application form.
Campus facilities include the Sopchyshyn Family Library, Newman Theological Bookstore, a chapel, a student kitchen, lockers, and computer access with wireless networks. The grounds offer walking trails and a large gathering area, and student parking is available.
