NYMC offers graduate-level degrees through three schools. The School of Medicine, founded in 1860, awards approximately 190 M.D. degrees annually and is one of the oldest medical schools in the nation. The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (established 1963, renamed 2022) offers Ph.D., M.S., and M.D./Ph.D. dual degrees with ~150 students and 90 faculty. The School of Health Sciences and Practice (founded 1981) provides accredited programs in public health (M.P.H., Dr.P.H.), speech-language pathology (M.S.), and physical therapy (D.P.T.) with ~500 students. Students may pursue dual and joint degrees across schools at reduced cost.
The 2025 entering class averaged 3.77 GPA and 516 MCAT score (92nd percentile). The medical school uses the multiple mini interview system and CASPer test (both from McMaster University). 31% of medical students are in-state; 21% self-identify as members of groups underrepresented in medicine. On-campus housing is provided for most preclinical medical students in furnished, unfurnished, single, or married configurations.
The 54-acre Valhalla campus is situated within the larger 565-acre Grasslands Reservation, home to Westchester Medical Center and county offices. Located in Westchester County, the campus offers suburban tranquility with easy access to Manhattan (30-minute train ride). The campus features the Medical Education Center with a naturally-lit gross anatomy laboratory, Clinical Skills and Simulation Center (21,000 sq ft), Basic Sciences Building, and BioInc@NYMC biotechnology incubator. Students benefit from a network of 700+ affiliated practice sites across the tri-state region.
NYMC is a leader in medical research with more than half of research funded by the National Institutes of Health. Active research areas include cardiovascular disease, cancer, neuroscience, and vaccine development. The institution houses 150,000 sq ft of research space and operates BioInc@NYMC, a health tech and biotechnology incubator supporting biopharma companies. In 2017, NYMC opened the Center of Excellence in Precision Responses to Bioterrorism and Disasters, the first such center in the Hudson Valley.
Medical students rotate through Westchester Medical Center (main academic medical center), Metropolitan Hospital Center in Manhattan (affiliated since 1875), and 20+ additional hospitals across four states. In 2009, USMLE Step 1 pass rates were 99-100%, above the national average. As of 2007, 13,270 physicians had graduated from the School of Medicine with 97% board-certified; approximately 917 served on medical school faculties including 18 department chairs.
