Ner Israel Joseph (J.T.) Tanenbaum Yeshivah College is a Torah and secular education institution in Thornhill, Ontario, founded in 1959.
In early 1959, a meeting was called by the founders of the Yeshiva in Toronto. The newly formed board turned to Ner Israel Rabbinical College of Baltimore to assist in establishing the Yeshiva. Rabbi Sholom Gold arrived in May 1959 as the first principal and worked to convince parents to send their sons to the yeshiva. The Yeshiva opened its doors in September 1959 with twelve students, and the first Grade 13 graduation took place in 1964.
Ner Israel's philosophy is to combine a rigorous Torah education with a full secular curriculum to provide a comprehensive education. The college promotes the well-balanced student, imbuing him with a high level of Torah knowledge steeped in religious values. The Baish Hamedrash was formed and Harav Yaakov Weinberg became the Rosh Hayeshiva; he served in that role until 1971. Rabbi Mayerfeld's daily Talmud lectures, which are open to the community, have been critically acclaimed as being one of the finest in North America.
The Yeshiva's first home was on Finch Avenue, in a property with a stone mansion, which served as the Finch Campus for the next 27 years. A second building containing eight classrooms was erected by 1961. Listed facilities include the Beis Hamedrash, a dining room, dormitories, and classrooms in the second building.
The college is located at 250 Bathurst Glen Drive, Thornhill, Ontario L4J 8A7. Its phone number is (905) 731-1224.
