Montgomery Community College offers programs of study within five areas: Arts & Sciences, Business Technology, Commercial Technology, and Health/Public Services Technology. Most programs provide a choice among an associate's degree, diploma, or certificate. The college also offers developmental studies and continuing education courses, including distance learning through Internet-based platforms and a Blackboard learning management system. Specialized short-term programs include the North Carolina Public Safety Drone Academy (in partnership with the NC Department of Transportation), NRA-approved gunsmithing and shooting training, knifemaking, taxidermy, and heritage crafts such as pottery and metalworking.
The 153-acre campus in Troy includes approximately 134,400 square feet of facilities as of 2010. The campus library houses the Gelynda & Arron Capel Pottery Collection, featuring both ancient and modern pottery pieces. The college continues to expand its infrastructure to support its growing academic and workforce development programs.
Montgomery Community College serves as the training provider for Apprenticeship Montgomery, a partnership program focused on preparing high school and adult students for employment in the manufacturing industry. The program involves collaboration with local employers, Montgomery County Schools, NCWorks, and the North Carolina Department of Commerce. The college was chartered in 1967 as Montgomery Technical Institute and received accreditation in December 1978 from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. It became Montgomery Technical College in 1983 and adopted its current name, Montgomery Community College, in September 1987. The institution is part of the North Carolina Community College System.
