A defunct Baptist liberal arts university that operated in Kentucky from 1949 to 2014.
Mid-Continent University offered three bachelor's degrees (Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Bachelor of Ministry) and two associate's degrees (Associate of Arts and Associate of Science). The institution was a four-year, liberal arts Christian college that achieved regional accreditation by 1992 under President LaVerne Butler. However, in December 2013, the university received an accreditation warning from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, which was extended for a second year and ultimately triggered denial of federal financial aid.
The Mid-Continent athletic teams were known as the Cougars. The university competed in seven intercollegiate varsity sports: men's baseball, basketball, and soccer; women's basketball, softball, and volleyball; and a co-ed spirit squad. The Cougars were members of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA), competing in the American Midwest Conference during their final year.
The institution was founded in January 1949 as the West Kentucky Baptist Institution in Clinton, Kentucky, and relocated to Mayfield in 1957. The Harris family donated approximately 100 acres in 1972, enabling campus expansion. After years of financial strain and accreditation warnings, the university ceased operations on June 30, 2014. All faculty and staff were laid off on April 16, 2014, though volunteers continued supporting graduating seniors. The university filed for bankruptcy protection in October 2014.
