About
Dr. MGR-Janaki College of Arts and Science for Women is a private women's college located at 11, Durgabai Deshmukh Rd, Raja Annamalaipuram, Chennai, Tamil Nadu - 600028. The campus is situated along the banks of the Adyar River. At present, the college functions as the Adyar campus of VISTAS (Vels Institute of Science, Technology & Advanced Studies), a Deemed-to-be University recognized as a Category I institution by the UGC.
History
The college was established in 1996 by Dr. Latha Rajendran as a tribute to the late Bharat Ratna Dr. M.G. Ramachandran and his wife, Mrs. Janaki Ramachandran. In 1996, the management of the private company decided to transform the premises into a women's college. The college commenced with 70 students and 16 faculty members. The premises were formerly used by Neptune Studios Private Limited, established in June 1946 and renamed Sathya Studios Private Limited in November 1956. Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam visited the campus in 2012, and a bronze statue of Dr. M.G. Ramachandran was unveiled on the campus in 2019.
Academics
The college offers 10 undergraduate programmes and 2 postgraduate programmes. Its mission includes imparting knowledge effectively, fostering innovative thinking, and promoting original, high-quality, and socially relevant research. The M.A. Performing Arts programme is an interdisciplinary programme encompassing dance, music, theatre, yoga, history, and philosophy, and is the only programme of its kind in Tamil Nadu.
