MCW offers M.D., Pharm.D., Ph.D., M.S., M.P.H., M.A., and Master of Science in Anesthesia degrees, plus combined M.D./Ph.D. through the Medical Scientist Training Program. Joint degree programs are available with Marquette University and Milwaukee School of Engineering. The institution grants residency training in nearly 30 medical specialties and offers graduate certificate programs. Graduate programs span biochemistry, bioethics, bioinformatics, biomedical engineering, and public health disciplines.
MCW is the largest research center in eastern Wisconsin and the second-largest in the state. In fiscal year 2020, the institution invested $300 million in research, teaching, training, and related purposes, ranking in the top third of U.S. medical schools for NIH research support. The college houses the Center for Infectious Disease Research and operates the Froedtert and MCW Cancer Center, among other research facilities.
MCW employs a holistic admissions approach evaluating academic achievement, MCAT scores, CASPer assessments, personal statements, essays, experiences, recommendations, and interviews. For the entering class of 2021, the average MCAT score was 511 and undergraduate GPA was 3.75, with approximately 58% female representation.
The main Milwaukee campus is suburban and adjacent to Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital (opened 1980), one of three major affiliated health care centers. Children's Hospital of Wisconsin is also a key teaching partner. The Green Bay campus (2015) and Wausau campus (2016) provide focused three-year curricula for primary care, general surgery, and psychiatry specialties.
