Medgar Evers College offers baccalaureate and associate degrees across four schools. The School of Business is accredited by ACBSP and NASPAA, and has produced over 2,000 graduates including attorneys, judges, and CPAs. The School of Liberal Arts and Education supports 45% of full-time enrollment and houses six departments: Education, Interdisciplinary Studies, English, Mass Communications, Psychology, and Social and Behavioral Sciences. The School of Science and Allied Health offers degrees in Biology, Mathematics, Nursing, and Computer Sciences, with transfer pathways to SUNY Downstate Medical Center programs in physician assistant, physical therapy, diagnostic imaging, and occupational therapy. The college also operates specialized centers including the Center for Black Literature, Center for Women's Development, Male Development and Empowerment Center, and DuBois Bunche Center for Public Policy.
The college occupies four buildings in Crown Heights, including the original Brooklyn Preparatory School building (1908) and a modern five-story Academic Building with computer-enabled classrooms, labs, and a 500-person dining hall. The student body is 71% Black, 18% Hispanic, 3% Asian, and 2% White, with 63% low-income students. Campus life includes numerous student clubs, the ADAFI student newspaper, chapters of professional organizations, and Greek life. The college is located near cultural institutions including the Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, and Prospect Park.
Medgar Evers College accepts transfer students and international applicants. The college offers flexible pathways including the NY State Reconnect program, which covers tuition, fees, and books for eligible students. Campus visits are available to prospective students, families, and community members. The college maintains an open admissions philosophy rooted in its founding mission to serve Central Brooklyn's community.
The college has graduated over 12,000 alumni since opening in 1971, including U.S. Congresswoman Yvette Clarke, author Iyanla Vanzant, and former New York State Senator Carl Andrews. The graduation rate within 150% of normal time (six years) is 11.81%. The college's Public Administration program is ranked No. 8 in the country. Newsweek ranked MEC among the top 100 best colleges for women in 2026.
