The college was established in April 1946 as the Maritime Forest Ranger School, a co-operative effort of the provincial governments of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia and the wood-using industries of the two provinces. It was created to retrain returning World War II veterans and address the need for skilled forest workers in the Maritimes. In 1980 the college expanded to include a francophone campus in Bathurst, NB. In 2003 the school moved to a two-year program and changed its name to the Maritime College of Forest Technology. In 2008 MCFT began offering an Advanced Diploma Program in Forest Technology and Fish & Wildlife Technology.
All students attending the college are enrolled in the two-year Forest Technology Diploma program. In 2017 MCFT offered a two-year Utility Arborist program, the first diploma program introduced independent of the Forest Technology program since 1946.
The current campus is part of the Hugh John Flemming Forestry Centre and is shared with the Canadian Forest Service and Department of Natural Resources. Listed facilities include the Hugh John Flemming Forestry Centre grounds, the UNB woodlot, Hockey Pond, an Outdoor Eating Area, Bedard Hall, Torunski Hall, and residence facilities.
