Founded in 1973 by photographer David Lyman as The Maine Photographic Workshops, the institution evolved to include degree-granting programs beginning with an Associate of Arts in the 1980s and a Master of Fine Arts in 1995. Originally a for-profit enterprise, the organization transitioned to nonprofit status in 2007 when faculty and staff successfully acquired it.
