History
Loreto College, Calcutta was founded in 1912 by the Sisters of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary (IBVM), commonly known as Loreto, a Catholic religious order established by Mary Ward in 1609. The college began as an extension of the School Department of Loreto House. In 1912-1913, it became one of the first women's colleges to gain affiliation to the University of Calcutta, allowing its senior students to sit for university exams.

The college offers undergraduate departments including Education, English, Political Science, Geography, History, Psychology, Economics, Bengali, Hindi, Journalism & Mass Communication, Film Studies, Human Rights, Mathematics, Sociology and Statistics. Postgraduate programmes include M.A. in English and M.A. / M.Sc. in Psychology, along with a B.Ed. programme.
Recognition
The college was re-accredited by NAAC in 2021 with an 'A' Grade (4th Cycle) and is ISO 9001:2015 certified. It won the College of the Year Award at the Sankalp Education Awards 2019 and was presented with the IIT Spoken Tutorial Educator Resource Award 2023 by IIT Bombay.
